CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 4, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — It’s been a dream ever since his son was diagnosed with a rare developmental disorder; today it’s a reality – Camp Blue Skies – a camp for adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities. Dick Sesler, the camp’s founder, is happy to report that this camp has successfully completed its first two sessions and they’ve been an overwhelming success. There’s even a waiting list for the 2011 fall session.

Sesler, along with family and friends, have been working to keep the cost of camp down so that it is open to everyone who is interested. As a result, now that they have the proven the need, they are beginning to aggressively begin to raise funds.

Sesler’s son, Brent, has Williams Syndrome – a rare genetic disorder that can lead to problems with development.

“As my son matured, I recognized that there was a real decline in services for adults with disabilities who are 21 and older,” he says.

To date, Brent has attended both camp sessions – one in North Carolina and one in Rutledge, GA. And, he plans to keep at it.

Like many traditional camps, the first night of camp kicks off with s’mores by the campfire and shared stories. The last night culminates in a fun-filled dance.

During the week-long camp experience, each camper is exposed to fun and adventure through appropriate challenges, and a better understanding of self and others through group living and shared experiences.

The camper to counselor ratio is approximately 2:1 and a professional caregiver is present in each cabin. Additionally, volunteer counselors work to make sure that each camper has a positive experience.

Currently, campers range in age from 21 to 60.

“My vision is to create camp experiences throughout the United States for adults with developmental disabilities,” concludes Sesler.
