TEMECULA, Calif., May 19, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Thanks to its SmartTouch technology, Milgard® Tuscany® Series windows and doors was named winner of a 2011 Smart Choice Award by the 50+ Housing Council, a group dedicated to helping the building industry address the needs of today’s aging population in Southern California. The prestigious award recognizes products and services that represent the 10 most innovative solutions of the year. All winners were selected by an independent panel of judges whose criteria included products and services that are innovative, green, sustainable, energy efficient, environmentally friendly and/or related to Universal Design.

Energy efficiency may be a chief consideration for anyone building or remodeling, but newer technologies that address today’s aging-in-place trend are giving trade professionals and consumers reason to broaden their view. One of these new technologies is the SmartTouch® lock from Milgard Windows & Doors, an innovation that has not only earned praise from consumers for making window and door operation easier, but also from organizations such as the Arthritis Foundation, Industrial Designers Society of America, and most recently, the 50+ Housing Council of the Building Industry Association of Southern California.

“Our 50+ Smart Choice Awards program focuses on products that enrich the daily lives of seniors,” said Brian Dawson, a member of the 50+ Housing Council and partner with Irwin Partners Architects. “The Milgard Tuscany Series with SmartTouch hardware received an Arthritis Foundation Ease-of-Use Commendation, making it a clear choice by the judges for one of our top ten winners.”

Milgard became the first window manufacturer to receive the Ease of Use Commendation from the Arthritis Foundation. This distinction provides assurance that the product represented has been thoroughly tested and meets stringent ease-of-use standards. Today, Milgard has received the Ease-of-Use Commendation on several products, including the Tuscany and Montecito® Series of premium vinyl windows and doors and the new Essence™ Series wood windows.

Easier by Design:
The Milgard patent-pending SmartTouch hardware is designed to engage with simple, one-touch operation when opening and closing, as well as locking and unlocking the window or door. Unlike conventional cam-style locks mounted atop window sashes, the SmartTouch lock has an integrated, low-profile design. The lock mechanism is recessed into the window frame, providing a clean, sleek look that complements any type of architecture or interior design. When the window is closed and locked, the latch is down and hidden. When the window is open, the latch stays open, indicating the window is unlocked.

In addition to its contributions to Milgard earning the 2011 Smart Choice Award and Ease-of-Use Commendations, SmartTouch was also awarded the prestigious IDEA Award for innovation excellence.

“With today’s baby boomer generation retiring, products that are universally designed for ease-of-use will only grow in demand-and importance,” said Maureen Faccia, Director of Marketing for Milgard. “As an industry leader, we’re committed to developing innovative products and solutions that enable people to live independently in their own homes longer and more comfortably.”

(OGI) is celebrating 40 years as a leader in the aluminum and steel bar grating industry. Founded with the motto, “Make It Right and Ship When Promised,” OGI continues to expand while providing the highest level of customer service.

OGI was founded in Canton, Ohio by Harold Bartley and son David W. Bartley, Sr. in June 1970. Now best known for its full line and specialty niche grating capabilities, OGI began as a fabricator of light duty weld forge bar grating for Blaw Knox Gratings. Within a short period of time, OGI began manufacturing heavy-duty steel grating. As a result, the company quickly grew adding staff including production employees, sales reps and project detailers.

Over the course of the company’s 40 year history, OGI has expanded its product offerings to include aluminum, specialty carbon and stainless steel grating products. More specialty niche products were eventually added, including heavy duty riveted deck grating and our popular line of Wheels n’ Heels(R) ADA compliant grating products. In 2007 the newest division, OGI Architectural Metal Solutions was founded, and thus expanded its capabilities and product lines to include architectural metal products.

OGI began as a company of three employees in a single 8,000 square foot facility. The company has grown to include over 350 employees working in over 400,000 square feet of space at five locations around the country. With its original Canton facility and other locations in Ridgeland, South Carolina; Houston, Texas; Lindon, Utah; and Longwood, Florida, OGI is positioned to continue supplying the nation with superior products and customer service.

With the help of their customers, Ohio Gratings, Inc. has become a market leader in the grating industry. We thank them for allowing us to grow and expand our business to better serve the market.

CANTON, Ohio (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Ohio Gratings, Inc. has expanded its popular Wheels n’ Heels® line of heavy duty steel grating to include the Metro and InVent styles. The new styles offer all of the advantages of the original Wheels n’ Heels® with some recent additional features.

The Wheels n’ Heels® Metro replaces the original Long Span Series II. The new style offers a greater strength-to-weight ratio and has an improved aesthetic appeal with no top welds. The Wheels n’ Heels® Metro is available with 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch spacing between the bars, allowing for maximum ventilation for a variety of grating needs.

Similar to the Wheels n’ Heels® Metro, the new Wheels n’ Heels® InVent provides an improved strength-to-weight ratio and eye-pleasing design. The Wheels n’ Heels® InVent offers a different design from the Metro in that the main support bearing bars are under the top surface bars. Additionally, the support bars run in the direction perpendicular to the top surface bars. Because of this feature, Wheels n’ Heels® InVent offers the most flexibility in grating support projects.

Both the Wheels n’ Heels® Metro and InVent are available in stainless or carbon steel and can be modified with a slip resistant coating.

The Wheels n’ Heels® line was introduced in the early 1990′s. It is the first grating product to combine the AASHTO H-20 wheel load ratings with the pedestrian comfort requirements that meet or exceed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. The Wheels n’ Heels® line is specifically designed to easily accommodate wheelchair and high heel traffic.

Since 1970, Ohio Gratings, Inc. has been a leader in the aluminum and steel bar grating market. With headquarters in Canton, Ohio and additional facilities in Florida, South Carolina, Texas and Utah, Ohio Gratings, Inc. is committed to providing quality products and quality service. (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Trusty-Step International, a trusted and established anti-slip floor treatment manufacturer, recently introduced its clear non-slip acrylic coating with crystal clear polycarbonate aggregate to its floor treatment line.

The company’s new acrylic anti-slip floor treatment is virtually undetectable, with surfaces retaining an exceptionally durable, reflective, fade-resistant and non-yellowing high-gloss finish for up to three years before reapplication is advised. It is the first coating of its kind to ensure slip-resistant surfaces maintain the same visual appearance before and after treatment.

The company highly recommends its new clear acrylic coating product for use on vinyl, VCT, glass, metal and painted concrete. Many customers also elect to use the new coating on glossy marble, granite, ceramic and porcelain tile surfaces in lieu of the microscopic etching product, No. 1001 Trusty-Step Anti-Slip Floor Treatment, to retain optimal polish and sheen.

“We’re excited to now offer a safe and proven alternative to our popular microscopic etching treatment,” explains Stan Handman, Founder of Trusty-Step International. “As we continue to expand our product and service line, we remain committed to supporting our client’s needs for safety, innovation and beauty.”

No. 1222 Non-slip acrylic coating with crystal clear polycarbonate aggregate can be used on both indoor and outdoor surfaces, with slip resistance exceeding ASTM, OSHA and ADA requirements. The company guarantees all treated floors have a Static Coefficient of Friction (SCOF) reading of 0.06 or greater, the minimum measurement required for horizontal surfaces by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Accoya is a modified wood produced only from certified sustainable sources, using an environmentally responsible process. It offers outstanding durability, dimensional stability, and reliability.

Notes to Editors:

Universal Forest Products Western Division Inc. is a subsidiary of Universal Forest Products Inc. (www.ufpi.com). Universal Forest Products Inc. is listed on the NASDAQ under the symbol “UFPI.” Universal Forest Products is the nation’s leading manufacturer and distributor of wood and wood-alternative products to retail/dealer, site-built construction, manufactured housing and industrial markets.

Titan Wood Inc. (www.titanwood.com) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Accsys Technologies PLC (www.accsysplc.com) group of companies. Accsys Technologies PLC (AIM & EURONEXT: AXS) is listed on the London Stock Exchange AIM market and on Euronext Amsterdam by NYSE Euronext, under the symbol “AXS.”

Accoya(R) wood (www.accoya.info) is produced using a non-toxic process that effectively converts certified sustainably grown solid softwood and non-durable hardwood lumber into what is best described as a “new wood species” via acetylation. Distinguished by its durability, dimensional stability and, perhaps most importantly of all, its reliability (in terms of consistency of both supply and quality), Accoya(R) wood is particularly suited to exterior applications where performance and appearance are valued. Unlike most tropical and temperate hardwoods, its colour does not degrade when exposed to ultraviolet light. Moreover, the Accoya(R) wood production process does not compromise the wood’s strength or machinability. The combination of UV resistance, dimensional stability, durability and retained strength means that Accoya(R) wood offers a wealth of new opportunities to architects, designers, specifiers, builders and manufacturers Leading applications include external doors and windows, shutters/shading, siding and cladding, decking, outdoor furniture/equipment and glulam beams for structural use.

Wood Acetylation is a process, which increases the amount of “acetyl” molecules in wood, thereby changing its physical properties. The environmentally responsible process protects wood from rot by making it “inedible” to most micro-organisms and insects, without – unlike some conventional treatments – making it toxic. It also greatly reduces the wood’s tendency to swell and shrink, making it less prone to cracking and ensuring that when painted it requires dramatically reduced maintenance. Acetylated wood’s increased durability offers major carbon sequestration advantages, compared to others woods and especially typical man-made building materials.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Advantage Trim & Lumber Company today announced that, due to recent inquiries from customers, composite decking supplies and materials will not be distributed or sold at any of our locations. While composite decking remains popular due to its low cost, we are of the opinion that using composite materials for decks is a hazard to the public.

“At Advantage Trim & Lumber, we care about the quality of life of those who use our products,” said Dan Ivancic, the company’s Director of Marketing. “Recently, we have noticed more customers asking about the benefits of composite decking as opposed to the more dependable hardwood decking options. Because we have a commitment to selling decking products that don’t compromise public safety, we decided to release a statement explaining why wood workers across the world prefer the look of and quality of hardwood decking like ipe compared to the artificial look and substandard quality of composite decking.”

Composite decking has been the subject of many class action lawsuits due to alleged uncontrollable mold, mildew, and fungi. In addition, composite decking complaints are riddled with claims of rapid deterioration due to inferior manufacturing. These lawsuits stem from personal injuries that occurred when people have fallen through a deck made of composite decking materials. In contrast, there have been no class action lawsuits or widespread complaints about the durability of ipe decking.

When doing research on composite decking versus ipe decking, many people are also surprised to discover that composite decking materials are made with petroleum based products like polyethylene and are not eco-friendly. Moreover, when you consider the fact that an ipe deck can last decades longer than a composite deck, ipe decking is clearly more eco-friendly than composite decking. This disparity in endurance can be attributed to the fact that composite decks are extremely fragile and can easily splinter and break. The need to constantly maintain and repair a composite deck contributes to the overall demand for cheap lumber and is a detriment to good forestry practices. On the other hand, when you have an ipe deck the need to replace part of the whole of it can be significantly reduced due to this exotic hardwood’s durability.

In fact, ipe has received the highest rating from the US Forest Products Laboratory. Plus, the United States Naval Research Laboratory tested this exotic hardwood and found that an untreated piece of ipe could resist termites for over 15 years. A single piece of ipe can be left untreated and exposed to the elements for over 40 years before it starts wearing down. A treated piece of ipe wood could last an estimated 100 years or more.

Ipe decking has proved time and again that it can withstand the elements and everyday use like no other hardwood in the market today. It’s for those reasons that cities and businesses across the world have chosen ipe decking materials. In fact, ipe has been and continues to be utilized in commercial applications such as, the famous Atlantic City and Miami Beach boardwalks, Las Vegas’ Treasure Island, and even the Brooklyn Bridge walkway.

Advantage Trim & Lumber Company operates with over 120,000 square feet of manufacturing space. We also produce over 50 species of hardwood flooring, hardwood lumber and a variety of FSC certified materials. Advantage also specializes in custom milled hardwood products delivered direct to the end users’ home or jobsite anywhere in the world from their locations in Grover, North Carolina and Buffalo, New York.

WOBURN, Mass., March 3 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — GerrityStone, New England’s premier interior and exterior custom stonework specialist, is pleased to announce the company is participating as one of the expert presenters at the upcoming Residential Design and Construction (RDC) Show, held April 1-2, 2009 at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston.

GerrityStone is hosting two workshops each day of the show – one geared to homeowners and the other to trade professionals. The workshops focus on all aspects of custom stonework installation and what pitfalls to avoid when planning stonework projects. Participants of both workshops will have a much better idea of the complexity and expertise required for completing a successful installation.

“Creating custom stonework is not just about design,” said Tracy Streckenbach, chief executive officer of GerrityStone. “It’s also about precision: finding the right material, fabricating the stone to exact specifications, and then installing the stonework properly so that it lasts a lifetime. Our demonstrations walk homeowners or trade professionals through the entire process.”

“From Quarry to Kitchen: Understanding materials and selecting a partner for your next custom stone installation” is specifically aimed at homeowners considering stonework options for their home. This workshop educates homeowners on material and process options by exploring the pros and cons of various stones (granite, marble, engineered stone, green products, etc.), and offering tips on how to evaluate and choose the right custom stone installation partner for a project.

“From Quarry to Kitchen: Managing custom fabrication and installation of stone surfaces in your custom project” is intended more for builders, contractors, designers, and other home industry trade professionals. This workshop goes into more technical detail about each stage of custom stone design – from material sourcing to fabrication and installation. The workshop also gives a rare “insider’s look” at what can go wrong if the details are not managed properly.

“Not only are these two workshops designed to help homeowners and contractors create beautiful stonework, but participants will learn everything they need to know to make the project run smoothly from start to finish,” Streckenbach said.

GerrityStone will present both workshops on the main conference floor demonstration stage (located near the back of the World Trade Center).

The workshop schedule is as follows:

	Wednesday, April 1
1:45 p.m. (Trade)
7:00 p.m. (Homeowner)

	Thursday, April 2
3:15 p.m. (Trade)
5:30 p.m. (Homeowner)

GerrityStone specializes in precision-crafted stonework for interior and exterior applications. Achieving the industry’s highest customer satisfaction ratings and offering the widest-selection of directly sourced materials are the cornerstones of the company’s philosophy.

GerrityStone is located just 10 miles north of Boston, in Woburn, Massachusetts and serves clients throughout New England. The GerrityStone Design Center is open Monday through Saturday with extended hours Tuesday through Friday.
