BOSTON, Mass., Nov. 15, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Charlie Allen Restorations is the winner of a 2011 Contractor of the Year (CotY) Silver Award for its thoughtful introduction of a modern spa-style bath into a 1915 Colonial in Cambridge, MA. The award was presented at a gathering of the Eastern Massachusetts chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry on Wednesday, November 9.

“We work hard to accomplish the lifestyle needs of our clients while respecting the historic character of their homes. This award is a wonderful validation of that dedication, and results from the outstanding talents of our entire team,” says Charlie Allen, president of the Cambridge-based firm.

The owners of the award-winning bath loved their 1915 Colonial, but hated the cramped layout and jarring 1970s design of its master bath. They requested a functional and soothing oasis.

The renovation process began by expanding the bathroom’s footprint several feet in each direction, borrowing space from the master bedroom and dressing area. This created room to accommodate a new double vanity and a separate shower and tub. The existing bath was completely gutted, revealing that all floor joists had been compromised in a previous renovation. With a heavy soaking tub moving in, reframing the floor became the first priority. An elevator shaft runs adjacent to the bathroom, so extreme caution was used during construction to protect the system.

The large tub was placed during rough framing of the new room and repositioned as radiant heating and tile flooring were installed. Because it would be located beneath a window, glass panes were replaced with safer tempered glass. To achieve a spa feeling the room’s lines had to be perfectly level – a real challenge in a 95-year-old-house. Deco cabinetry with abundant room for storing toiletries was installed. Pale blue Ann Sachs tile lines the shower stall and tub surround, and the vanity countertop and apron are Axul Cielo marble.

The interior designer on the winning project was Sandra Fairbank of Fairbank Design, Ltd. Other project partners include Metropolitan Cabinets and Countertops and Monique’s Bath Showroom.

The award marks the fifth CotY Award won by Charlie Allen Restorations, named Best Restoration Contractor 2010 by Boston Home Magazine.

The Eastern Massachusetts chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry is a not-for-profit trade association committed exclusively to enhancing the professionalism of the remodeling industry and providing ethical and quality service to the region’s remodeling homeowners. Representing full-service remodeling contractors, design-build firms, architects, designers, subcontractors, product manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, and those who provide services and products to the remodeling field, NARI stands as the spokesgroup of the industry and an ally to the nation’s homeowners.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 7, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Charlie Allen Restorations, the Cambridge-based firm specializing in the renovation and restoration of period homes, has won two 2011 Preservation Awards-one each from the Cambridge Historical Commission (CHC) and the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission (SHPC).

“When I first came to this area to attend college in 1966, I was amazed by the period architecture that can be seen on almost every street. These historic homes are a treasure we all share, and I’m grateful to organizations like the CHC and the SHPC that support and recognize efforts to preserve them,” says Allen.

The firm’s award from the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission acknowledges work done on the landmark Edward Crane House.

“We first began working on this house in 1998 under the stewardship of its previous owners,” says Allen. “When the current homeowners moved in, they refused to do anything less than the right thing for their historic house, and I’m thankful that they have entrusted us with its restoration.”

The project recognized by the CHC involved the thorough exterior restoration of a 1923 Colonial Revival house named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

“This home was designed by Lois Lilley Howe, founder of one of the first all-female architecture firms in America,” says Allen. “It was a thrill to return it to its original condition.”

Steps taken to restore the home’s exterior included removing a replacement roof balustrade and constructing a new one at original dimensions (calculated from a photograph supplied by the CHC), rebuilding a deck balustrade at the back of the house (again using historical photography as a guide), and replacing all broken and loose roof slates with matching slate. Following a paint consultation with the CHC, all exterior trim, window wells, decks, and balustrades were sanded, scraped, and re-painted, and stucco was completely removed from the chimney and reinstalled after flashing was replaced and the crown fixed. In addition, original exterior shutters were salvaged from basement storage, re-painted and reinstalled on the front of the house.

Charlie Allen Restorations is an award-winning remodeling firm specializing in the seamless integration of modern amenities into period homes while retaining original period details. Charlie Allen Restorations combines expert tradespeople and professional project management techniques to deliver exceptional customer satisfaction.

(SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Butler University Bulldogs are celebrating a number of achievements for the 2009-2010 athletic seasons. Not only did the Butler Bulldogs advance to the NCAA’s magical Final Four in basketball, but on the gridiron, the Bulldogs achieved record-setting milestones by going 11-1, topping the Pioneer Football League, capturing their first post-season win and winning the Gridiron Classic and the Hoosier Helmet Trophy. And success on the field has now translated into achievements of another flavor.

On April 19th, Butler University Director of Athletics Barry Collier announced a major renovation initiative for the 72-year old Butler Bowl. “The renovations at the Bowl will provide a great venue for our student-athletes and coaches to compete in and will support their tireless effort to accomplish team goals.” stated Collier.

After an exhaustive search, Butler selected the award-winning team of Southern Bleacher Company of Graham Texas to manufacture and install their new state of the art bleacher system. Butler also selected architects OMS of Indianapolis Indiana and general contractor Venturi Paine Construction of Indianapolis Indiana. The renovation of the facility just east of Butler University’s historic Hinkle Fieldhouse will increase the seating capacity to 5,547 with the addition of 5,109 new bleacher seats including suites along the west side of the field and 438 new bleacher seats for visiting fans on the east side.

Funded by the ButlerRising capital campaign, the renovations to the Butler Bowl mark a milestone for the stadium renovated in 1955 and 2004. Originally built in 1928, the Butler Bowl is home to BU’s football and men’s and women’s soccer programs. The current renovations are scheduled to be completed in time for the fall season and include seating by American Seating Company and Southern Bleacher’s premium Vertical Rail system – an alternative to traditional chain link. Vertical Rail can be installed anywhere chain link is currently in use and can also be used in combination with chain link and offers a clean, attractive and stylish safety option. It enhances entrance and exit ramps and portals. It creates a pleasing contrast with the horizontal lines of our anodized aluminum pickets that can be finished with Southern Bleacher’s Dur-kyn paint system for a lively and individualized appearance.

Southern Bleacher’s Garrett Pettus, “The renovation project represents an important milestone not only for the Butler Bulldog’s athletic aspirations, but also highlights Southern Bleachers’ ability to deliver award-winning products and services at an extremely competitive price given current economic market conditions. We are proud to partner with Butler University and the ButlerRising capital campaign committee to quickly deliver on our brand promise and look to complete the project before the 2010 football campaign begins and see the Butler Bulldogs to another Pioneer Football League championship.”

Since 1946, Southern Bleacher has set the standard of excellence in design and manufacturing of sports stadiums and entertainment venues; they are the nation’s largest stadium manufacturer. Southern Bleacher’s comprehensive services include budget analysis, estimates, proposal drawings and specifications at no cost. NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- When Fireman Hospitality Group decided to open a new Bond 45 restaurant in Maryland, overlooking the marina on the banks of the Potomac River, their challenge was to take advantage of the view on the terrace all year long, not just the few months of seasonal weather. The solution: a conservatory, bringing the feeling and light of the outdoors into a room protected from the weather. To build the conservatories, Fireman's architects turned to Conservatory Craftsmen.

(SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — When Fireman Hospitality Group decided to open a new Bond 45 restaurant in National Harbor, Maryland, overlooking the marina on the banks of the Potomac River, their challenge was to take advantage of the view on the terrace all year long, not just the few months of seasonal weather. The solution: a conservatory, bringing the feeling and light of the outdoors into a room protected from the weather. However, one large conservatory on the long terrace would not give the intimacy desired, so the group elected to build four separate green hip-roofed conservatories, all overlooking the harbor. To build the conservatories, Fireman’s architects turned to Conservatory Craftsmen, conservatory builders and designers out of Minnesota.

The design for the conservatories was a collaboration between the firms. “Initially, we had planned for 16′ ceilings on the conservatories,” said Mary Ellen Slattery of Peterson Companies, the construction manager of the project. “But because of the wind factor and loss of intimacy, we had to scale down the height of the conservatories. Conservatory Craftsmen helped us to modify the plans and brought the project in within budget. They were the easiest contractors to work with in the entire National Harbor project.”

Conservatory Craftsmen began construction on November 7, with the bulk of the project done by Thanksgiving and the entire project being finished by the restaurant’s opening in January.

“This project was a challenge, both in meeting deadlines and the construction specifications,” said Jim Hewitt of Conservatory Craftsmen. “But we had a great time working with the restaurant and the National Harbor group.”

In addition to designing and building the conservatory framework with a green powder coating to match the restaurant’s specifications, special glass had to be manufactured and installed to give privacy to dining, full view effect to the harbor and protection from occasional sun glare.

Already a landmark in New York’s theater district, Bond 45, a New York Italian Steak and Seafood House brings its retro Italian dining experience to the National Harbor complex of hotel, convention center, retail, dining, residential and office space, minutes from Washington, DC, and a short ferry ride or drive from Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. The restaurant seats 275, and the four glass conservatories are ideal for private dining for groups of 10 to 28.

Conservatory Craftsmen specializes in designing and building old-world conservatories using the most eco-friendly 21st century materials for residential as well as commercial projects in the US and Canada.

GRAHAM, Texas (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Routinely recognized as an industry leader for their implementation of cutting edge technologies and delivering exceptional value, Southern Bleacher and project partner Aztec Galvanizing Services recently received their 3rd Excellence in Hot-Dip Galvanizing award. The award, bestowed annually by The American Galvanizers Association (AGA), is awarded to only the premier manufacturers in the world that employ industry-leading galvanizing processes.

The prestigious award was bestowed upon the team in conjunction with the biggest transformation in the Cotton Bowl’s 78-year history, a $57 million upgrade that added more than 16,000 seats to its end zones, finishing out the ends of its oval bowl with upper-level decks and bringing its total capacity to 92,200.

Hot-dipped galvanized bleachers were a key component in the makeover. Hot-dip galvanizing is the process whereby fabricated steel, structural steel, castings, or small parts, including fasteners, are immersed in a kettle or vat of molten zinc, resulting in a metallurgically bonded alloy coating that protects the steel from corrosion. While corrosion is natural and inevitable, it can be minimized and delayed via the hot-dip galvanizing process. Those manufacturers that don’t utilize the proper galvanizing process contribute not only to unnecessary corrosion that costs the U.S. economy approximately $300 billion, but also fail to deliver the best possible, longest lasting product for their clients.

Stated Southern Bleacher executive Garrett Pettus, “We are once again honored by the award. At Southern Bleacher, we combine the best and brightest professionals with rigorous design and manufacturing processes and partner suppliers like Aztec Galvanizing Service to ensure we deliver the best products in the industry. Each customer entrusts us with their most important investments and we deliver superior product that maximizes their investment.”

Southern Bleacher’s comprehensive services include budget analysis, estimates, proposal drawings and specifications at no cost. Clients will benefit from their vast experience in addressing the myriad of building-code requirements, accessibility issues, safety requirements and lines of sight that fans will cheer about.

Since 1946, Southern Bleacher’s products grace soccer fields, college campuses, school districts, NASCAR tracks and rodeo arenas across the U.S.

From concept to reality, Southern Bleacher is customer driven. They work closely with planning committees and project architects to create a facility that is timeless and cost effective.

ASHEVILLE, N.C., June 1 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Whisper Mountain, home to the 2008 Southern Living Green Idea House, has once again teamed up with Southern Living Magazine to offer yet another environmentally-inspired home – Whisper Creek Cabin. This cabin is one of four homes, and the only mountain home, that can be won during the Southern Living’s Choose Your Home Giveaway sweepstakes this spring. The public can register to win the home through June 30.

The home opened for tours on May 14 and will continue through June 30. A $5 donation to tour the home will go to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy – its mission is to conserve the natural beauty and habitat of western North Carolina and east Tennessee. One way this is achieved is through developing and maintaining long-term conservation relationships with private landowners such as Whisper Mountain.

The Whisper Creek Cabin was constructed by Haven Custom Homes (www.HavenHomes.com), and Jade Mountain Builders of Asheville, and is built with many eco-friendly and environmental principles in mind, including the use of site-harvested poplar siding and recycled tin roofing for the front porch from a local barn

With a rustic exterior design of shingle and stone, the cabin’s design mimics the style and charm of 19th-centry homes that were once prevalent in the mountains of Western North Carolina. This 1,550 square foot cabin has two bedrooms and sits alongside Whisper Creek, one of the many protected mountain streams at Whisper Mountain. Sweeping views can be enjoyed from the front porch encompassing the great French Broad River Valley and surrounding parkland.

“We chose Haven Custom Homes for this project because their fabrication process is consistent with Whisper Mountain’s dedication to eco-friendly construction techniques,” Charlie Ball, developer, Whisper Mountain says.

The construction process that Haven Custom Homes employs is completed in a controlled environment, off-site, which limits disruption to the land, both physically and esthetically. The company also meets green certification thresholds for state and national “green built” programs, including North Carolina’s HealthyBuilt Home standards and Energy Star.

“We are privileged to participate in the 2009 Southern Living Choose Your Home Giveaway program and are delighted to partner with Charlie and his wife, Troy, and applaud their commitment to continuing to grow a sustainable community that honors and preserves the environment,” Jerry Smalley, CEO and president for Haven Custom Homes, says.
