CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 17, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — WEST: Advancing Women in Science and Technology hosted a Career Mentoring event for 80 Girl Scouts that ranged from grades 4 to 12. WEST taps into its community of women scientist, engineers and technologist as career mentors to hold events for young girls as well as early and mid career women.

On Friday, May 11, 2012, WEST held a Career Mentoring event for 80 Girl Scouts from Eastern Massachusetts made possible by the Mathworks who sponsored the event, and by Microsoft who provided WEST with the venue.

In all, there were 12 WEST career mentors for the Girl Scouts; the future leaders of science, engineering and technology. The career mentors included: dental hygienist, systems architect, molecular biologist, video game inventor, electrical engineer, environmental engineer, chemical engineer, post-doctor in biology, serial entrepreneur and a pharmacist.

Having women role models representing different career paths for the young girls show them that it is possible for women to work in science, engineering and technical fields. The Girls Scouts were inspired by this event and realized that professions are not limited to any gender, or in general, any person.

One Girl Scout said, “I didn’t know there were so many different things you could do when you are older and to never give up.”

Another young girl proclaimed, “No matter what, there is something out there for everyone.”

The Career Mentoring Event was also rewarding for the career mentors as well.

One mentor was moved by girls’ aspirations to become professionals in Science and Technology. She said, “It is exciting to see many young women who want to go into Science and Technology, you have all inspired me.”

While another mentor was impressed with the young ladies’ enthusiasm with activities inside and outside the classroom, she said, “I was really impressed with how articulate these ladies were in describing what they were passionate about inside and outside of the classroom. I want to encourage them to do things inside and outside the classroom.”

Ilene Fischer, WEST’s Executive Director said “WEST has a membership of 500-plus women in science, engineering and technology, they are great role models and career mentors for these young girls. This is WEST’s way of giving back and of developing the future leaders in Science and Technology.”

The event was successful, an unforgettable, life changing event for the girls, their parents and the mentors. By the end of the evening, the Girl Scouts, parents, and career mentors were moved and inspired by the new possibilities they had in front of them.

ALAMEDA, Calif., May 11, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Pacific Pinball Museum (PPM) proudly announces the addition of more than 100 rare items to their massive collection through a donation made by business entrepreneur and renowned philanthropist Richard Foos.

The donated items, which include pinball machines, jukeboxes, vintage soda machines and much more, are worth an estimated $85,000 in total value making it one of the largest donations PPM has received, according to Michael Schiess, museum founder and co-director. “Richard Foos’s generous donation is extremely important for us as it fills a gap in our collection with some very rare William’s wood rails like Country Club, 4 Roses and 3D,” said Schiess.

PPM is excited about the donation because it allows them to further their goal of keeping the history and culture of pinball in the public’s eye. “What our museum is trying to do is make these items available to the public and encourage other people to do the same,” said Schiess. “Too many times items are getting bought and held by a single owner without the public getting a chance to appreciate the machines. This is an important donation in keeping the American heritage of pinball public.”

More than half of the items donated to PPM are pinball machines. These machines include: Apollo, Be Bop, 4 Horsemen, Blue Skies, Daisy May, Harbor Lites, Lovely Lucy, Magic Clock and San Francisco. “We’re going to restore some of the items and hopefully have them on display in time for our Pacific Pinball Exposition 6 in September,” said Schiess.

Learn more about PPM at: http://www.pacificpinball.org .

Foos, a Los Angeles native, co-founded Rhino Records, a record label that sold greatest hits collections of previously released recordings, in 1973. The company was later sold to Time Warner. Foos, a limitless philanthropist has always made it a point to donate his time, wealth and possessions to better the community. At Rhino, Foos gave employees paid time off to perform community service, encouraged employees to mentor disadvantaged youth and at one point donated two percent of Rhino’s pretax profits to combat AIDS, homelessness and other problems. From 1991 to 2001, the company gave an estimated $2 million to various community-based charities. In the years since, Foos has donated a substantial amount to charities that address poverty and education issues. Today, Foos sits on the board of Rock the Classroom, which offers music programs in Los Angeles inner-city elementary schools.

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 8, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Executive Director, Mike Kessler, of the national non-profit youth education and service program for boys and girls, the Young Marines, announces a call-to-action campaign to over 300 Young Marine units across the country to participate in the organization’s 2nd annual “Raising Awareness to the Flag” initiative during National Flag Week in June.

The week of June 14 is designated as National Flag Week when the President of the United States will issue a proclamation urging U.S. citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. Flag Day is June 14 annually.

Most Americans can tell you what day of the year that Independence Day, or Veterans Day lands on each year, but Flag Day and National Flag Week is commonly an overlooked event. This is not to say that this special day to honor our flag has been forgotten. Many communities and civic groups arrange special ceremonies on, or around, Flag Day and National Flag Week each year; and, the Young Marines youth organization is no exception.

“Young Marine units are very active in civic events to honor the American flag, and they do so all year long,” says Kessler, “We believe that we can do even more as a national organization to help inform and enlighten the status of Flag Day and National Flag Week in our communities nationwide.”

Young Marine youth members are encouraged to not only participate in Flag Day/National Flag Week, but to take it a step further to raise awareness and create excitement in their communities surrounding the celebration across the country. During the Young Marines “Raising Awareness to the Flag” campaign, units will use a variety of venues and communication resources, such as their local media and community events.

Community organizations are encouraged to contact local Young Marine units when planning their Flag Day activities in their town. To find a unit near you, visit: www.YoungMarines.com and click on the “Find a Unit” link at the top of the national homepage.

Media outlets might consider interviews with local youth members of the Young Marines. Producers and editors can contact the national Director of Public Relations, Janelle Johnsen for more ideas tailored to your viewers/readership at: media@youngmarines.com.

About the Young Marines youth organization:

DALLAS, Texas, May 2, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Orange Leap (www.orangeleap.com), developer of cloud-based fundraising and constituent relationship management (CRM) software, today announced the hiring of Kent Hollrah to serve as company President.

“We are thrilled to welcome Kent to the Orange Leap team because of his proven success in building channel-oriented software companies,” said Orange Leap CEO Randy McCabe. “Orange Leap and our customers will benefit from his strong understanding of the nonprofit sector and his experience growing software companies.”

With over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit and accounting technology market space, Hollrah managed and developed channel programs at Open Systems and MIP, and served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Sage Nonprofit division in North America.

“Orange Leap has an excellent cloud-based constituent relationship management product for nonprofit fundraisers,” said Hollrah. “So far, the product and the company have only been limited by how quickly a direct sales force can sell and an internal services group can setup and train new customers; but by developing a channel of solution providers, Orange Leap can focus on developing new versions of the solution, providing customers with tools they need to achieve their mission, while channel partners handle the sales, system setup, and training.”

Hollrah will be the chief architect of the Orange Leap partner program, which will include recruitment, authorized reseller agreements, marketing on behalf of partners and a “Partner Bill of Rights” which outlines the Orange Leap commitment to an outstanding partner experience.

“Just as we are committed to an outstanding customer experience, as we launch our channel we want to ensure that the program inspires enthusiasm and attracts expert, dynamic partners,” said McCabe. “Kent brings the level of experience and expertise necessary to create such partnerships.”

About Orange Leap:
Orange Leap helps nonprofits raise more money with fewer resources by streamlining the fundraising process with innovative technology solutions and collaborative support. A cloud-based, Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) technology solutions company, Orange Leap effectively manages donor and constituent relationships; processes donations and tracks gift history; and automates fundraising and marketing communications.

KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 2, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Move For Hunger is proud to announce their recent partnership with Mango Moving at the Signature Level. Mango Moving LLC, a Kansas City-based national moving company, has committed to support Move For Hunger’s fight against hunger through a generous financial contribution.

Move For Hunger is a non-profit organization that works with moving companies and other members of the relocation industry to combat the growing hunger problem in the United States. Many people throw out a good deal of “stuff” when they move. Unfortunately, that “stuff” often includes food that could be delivered to a family in need rather than thrown away.

In partnering with Move for Hunger, Mango Moving will provide their customers with services to donate any food items that they won’t be moving instead of disposing of them. Mango will pack and deliver the food directly to Harvesters Community Food Network or a local food bank at no cost to the customer.

“Moving can be a stressful process. The Move for Hunger program gives customers a way to simplify part of the moving and packing process while giving them an opportunity to help families in need,” said Mango Moving COO, Robert Vespa. “We’re proud to be teaming up with such a great organization and a worthy cause.”

“We are so happy to have Mango Moving join the Move For Hunger family for 2012,” said Gavin Christiansen, Director of Operations at Move For Hunger. “Their commitment to ending hunger will help provide life saving meals for the most vulnerable in the Kansas City area.”

About Move For Hunger:
Move For Hunger is a non-profit organization that works with relocation companies across the country to pick up unwanted, unopened food from those who are moving and deliver it to local food banks across the country. To date, Move For Hunger is working with over 250 movers in 40 states and has collected more than 420,000 pounds of food. For more information or to find out how you can help support Move For Hunger, visit www.MoveForHunger.org and make an online donation to help our hunger relief efforts.

ATLANTA, Ga., April 30, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — On May 12, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Friendship Community Church at 4141 Old Fairburn Rd., Atlanta, GA, where the school is housed, the Fulton Leadership Academy (FLA) will hold its 2nd Annual Walk for Excellence to raise funds for the charter school’s programs.

“Charter schools don’t receive the same funding from the State of Georgia as traditional public schools,” says Aerle Wilson, the school’s marketing director and the mother of a 13 year old student at the school.

“So, we have to creatively raise funds to support the school and keep its doors open,” she continues. The all boys’ school, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, serves grades 6-12.

“This premier charter school’s largely African American young men are brilliant young students, called ‘Scholars,’ who are considered ‘at risk’ simply because black males are considered at risk in American society,” says Wilson. But none of the Scholars has a history of delinquency or drug use. They are not runaways nor do they have most of the other characteristics of “at-risk” students.

However, because boys are being left behind at alarming rates, some have struggled in traditional school environments. But, these boys are thriving at FLA, which was created in response to these alarming statistics. They excel in FLA’s curriculum based on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and a thematic approach that integrates experiences with aviation and aeronautics.

“Fulton Leadership Academy is determined to make a difference by molding young men who understand the value of education, who are committed to excel in all that they do, and who believe that they can, and must, give back to positively change the world in which they live,” says the School’s principal, Dr. Gavin Samms, of FLA’s mission.

Adds Wilson, “FLA’s staff, which doesn’t get paid nearly as well as they could elsewhere, is really committed to the School’s mission and these boys.” FLA’s day is long, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., so she says she’s appreciative of these teachers that can keep energetic and sometimes distractible boys so engaged all day.

One of the school’s most avid supporters is Attorney William Boddie, who was recently appointed Chairman of the School’s Advisory Board. Boddie says, “I got involved with the Fulton Leadership Academy last year after speaking at Career Day. I was very impressed with the intellect, high character, and discipline of FLA Scholars. It made me want to be more involved with FLA and the FLA Scholars.”

His law firm, The Boddie Law Group, LLC in Atlanta, GA contributed bottled water, granola bars, and Gatorade for last year’s Walk. The Firm also is a sponsor for this year’s event.

The Walk itself will be conducted by its participants walking around the Church’s grounds seven times-a total distance of nearly three miles. One of the reasons for this unique walk strategy is that the School is located in three different jurisdictions and permit costs to conduct the Walk on streets around the School were prohibitive for FLA. However, this is just one more example of the School’s determination to overcome its challenges.

But, the School also sees this Walk as an opportunity for participants to promote a healthy lifestyle while supporting worthy cause. “This walk will help us raise funds for the School’s general fund so we can expand FLA to serve more students,” says Wilson. “We’ve outgrown the space the Church has so graciously lent us and we need to find another, larger one.”

Events like the Walk, adds Dr. Samms, “are vital to our long term success.” He is requesting that people “consider making a donation to support the work going on at FLA and the model we are trying to create to ensure all of our boys are ultimately successful.”

The registration fee for the Walk is $20 and registration is available online by going to the site at www.fultonleadershipacademy.org and clicking “Support FLA.” Walkers my also register on site the day of the Walk between 8 – 9 a.m.

People may also donate to the School via PayPal without registering for the Walk or be a Walk sponsor or sponsor student walkers. All donations are tax deductible.

Boddie is excited about the event. “My involvement with FLA has been a very rewarding experience and I look forward to working and growing with FLA in the future,” he says.
VERTE, which translates to green in many languages, was created to recognize environmental champions who have grown a local program in just two years to reach over 66,000 students in over 100 schools across 19 states, Canada and Australia. The event, now in its second year, will also raise money and awareness for Grades of Green’s vision to make environmental protection second nature in young minds.

Environmental advocate and former educator, Ranae DeSantis, will be honored for her unwavering support of Grades of Green and the environment. Grades of Green will also honor Wells Fargo for bringing Grades of Green’s program to numerous inner-city schools and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County for sponsoring a Trash Free Lunch Challenge that will result in 10,000 bags of trash being diverted from landfills annually.

JD Roth, executive producer of ABC Daytime’s “The Revolution,” as well as long-running television series “The Biggest Loser” and “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition,” will host the evening’s festivities. Grades of Green students and educators will provide live demonstrations at “Eco-Stations” that highlight Grades of Green key programs, such as In-Class Composting, Trash Free Lunches, and Walk to School Wednesdays, and will explain how guests can take Grades of Green’s free and easy to use templates to bring to their own schools.

“The impact Grades of Green has had on our school is profound,” stated Dawnyell Goolsby, principal of Warren Lane Elementary. “Since launching Grades of Green’s Trash Free Lunch activity, our school has reduced the number of lunch time trash bags from eight to four. Its educational activities are also teaching our students how to compost, which will reduce the number of trash bags even more!”

For more information on the event, or to purchase a ticket, go to https://gradesofgreen.ejoinme.org/?tabid=339232 .

BALLINGER, Texas, April 20, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Mueller, Inc., a leading manufacturer of steel buildings and residential metal roofing, wants to extend a helping hand again this year to a Texas non-profit in need of a new facility. The campaign is called “Helping Hand.” One organization will be selected to receive a new Mueller steel building up to 4,000 square feet through applications received by June 1, 2012.

Because of today’s economic environment, Mueller wants to give something back to a struggling organization that always gives to others, whether it is a food bank facility, a volunteer firehouse, or maybe a senior citizen center.

Upon making the announcement, Mike Fry, director of marketing for Mueller (www.muellerinc.com) said, “With a large amount of applications received annually for our Helping Hand contest, it is apparent that there are many struggling organizations right here in Texas. We are glad to help the recipient change lives – now and for many years to come.”

For the 4th straight year, Mueller is teaming up with the popular television series, “Texas Country Reporter” with Bob Phillips to publicize this offering. Viewers of the program representing non-profit organizations will be invited to write in and explain why their organization is worthy of receiving a Mueller steel building. The winner will be announced on the television show this fall.

The non-profit Titus County Cares was awarded the first Mueller building. Titus County Cares serves hundreds of people by offering services such as a food bank, clothing, utility bill assistance and their unique “back-pack program” which provides weekend food for school-children of low-income families. The second recipient was the City of Buckholts and surrounding areas.

The campaign built a new facility to house trucks and equipment for the Buckholts Volunteer Fire Department. The third recipient of the Mueller Helping Hand building was West Texas Gifts of Hope. This non-profit organization benefits cancer patients and their families in an enormous area of west Texas by providing free overnight accommodations for patients who must travel great distances to receive chemo-therapy in Odessa, Texas.
