CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 17, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — WEST: Advancing Women in Science and Technology hosted a Career Mentoring event for 80 Girl Scouts that ranged from grades 4 to 12. WEST taps into its community of women scientist, engineers and technologist as career mentors to hold events for young girls as well as early and mid career women.

On Friday, May 11, 2012, WEST held a Career Mentoring event for 80 Girl Scouts from Eastern Massachusetts made possible by the Mathworks who sponsored the event, and by Microsoft who provided WEST with the venue.

In all, there were 12 WEST career mentors for the Girl Scouts; the future leaders of science, engineering and technology. The career mentors included: dental hygienist, systems architect, molecular biologist, video game inventor, electrical engineer, environmental engineer, chemical engineer, post-doctor in biology, serial entrepreneur and a pharmacist.

Having women role models representing different career paths for the young girls show them that it is possible for women to work in science, engineering and technical fields. The Girls Scouts were inspired by this event and realized that professions are not limited to any gender, or in general, any person.

One Girl Scout said, “I didn’t know there were so many different things you could do when you are older and to never give up.”

Another young girl proclaimed, “No matter what, there is something out there for everyone.”

The Career Mentoring Event was also rewarding for the career mentors as well.

One mentor was moved by girls’ aspirations to become professionals in Science and Technology. She said, “It is exciting to see many young women who want to go into Science and Technology, you have all inspired me.”

While another mentor was impressed with the young ladies’ enthusiasm with activities inside and outside the classroom, she said, “I was really impressed with how articulate these ladies were in describing what they were passionate about inside and outside of the classroom. I want to encourage them to do things inside and outside the classroom.”

Ilene Fischer, WEST’s Executive Director said “WEST has a membership of 500-plus women in science, engineering and technology, they are great role models and career mentors for these young girls. This is WEST’s way of giving back and of developing the future leaders in Science and Technology.”

The event was successful, an unforgettable, life changing event for the girls, their parents and the mentors. By the end of the evening, the Girl Scouts, parents, and career mentors were moved and inspired by the new possibilities they had in front of them.

HIGHLAND PARK, N.J., Feb. 1, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — 2012 marks an important milestone for Belvidere Pharmacy. It opened new doors in its new hometown of Highland Park. When owner and President Shara Rudner, R.Ph. took the reins of the business in 1996, it was a typical retail pharmacy stocked with everything from school to surgical supplies. But from the beginning, Belvidere’s staff handled requests for compounded, or custom-made, medications from veterinarians, physicians and specialists.

Word quickly spread about the pharmacy’s service and expertise. In 1998, the decision was made to drop the retail side and focus exclusively on compounding.

Compounding is the answer to health issues for countless patients: some patients may be allergic to ingredients found in mass-produced medications, some need to take more obscure drugs that are no longer manufactured, or may require a specific dose that isn’t commercially available. Others have difficulty with swallowing pills and would welcome a topical or liquid form of their medications. Compounding can meet all of these individual needs, and more.

Rudner always had great hopes for her business. But even she may not have foreseen how Belvidere would blossom over the next decade and a half. The name Belvidere has become synonymous with quality, and its reputation has grown beyond the physicians and patients it served at the outset. As a result, the organization has been commissioned by several pharmaceutical companies for clinical trials.

In 2007, Belvidere became the first PCAB accredited compounding pharmacy in New Jersey; earning it a place of honor on the national compounding stage. It was awarded reaccreditation in 2010.

The pharmacy’s new, ultramodern space will bring a host of conveniences and a serious “cool” factor to its clientele of patients, physicians and veterinarians. It’s considerably larger, with a spacious and comfortable waiting area; has a street-level entrance; and is easily accessible from major roads and several area hospitals. The pharmacy’s new design is contemporary, inviting, and “green,” featuring a seamless, metallic copper epoxy floor, solar panels, paper-free faxes and more.

The most important upgrades are those behind the scenes.

“We’ve always prided ourselves on being on the cutting edge,” said Rudner, “We offer nothing less to our clientele. But this move presented a unique opportunity: To create a facility that significantly exceeds national standards. And we are thrilled to have achieved that.” The Highland Park facility now offers multiple ISO class 7 compounding rooms; new clean rooms; and equipment designed to prepare sterile preparations. It’s all brand new, and eclipses most of Belvidere’s competitors.

“With our new facility, we’re able to accommodate individual customized medications, as well as any scale clinical study,” said Rudner. “Our innovative facility goes hand-in-hand with our extensive policies and procedures.”

According to Rudner, the demand for individualized medications is rapidly on the rise for patients of every species. In addition to formulating medications for people, Belvidere also specializes in compounding veterinary prescriptions. The pharmacy serves practitioners and patients from a wide geographic area and the full spectrum of specialties. Belvidere accepts most insurance plans in order to meet the growing needs of its customers.

With its new facility, a new chapter begins for this important player in a growing sector of modern healthcare.

“We’re very excited to call Highland Park home for Belvidere Pharmacy. It’s a vibrant community,” said Rudner. “We look forward to thriving here for years to come.”

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 9, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. David Lewis, internationally known whistleblower and respected expert on institutional fraud, released a report today calling for a formal investigation into the practices of the British Medical Journal (BMJ), and specifically into the actions of its editor, Dr. Fiona Godlee, and Brian Deer, a reporter she hired to write a series of articles which appeared in the journal beginning on January 4, 2011.

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 9, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Dr.

The BMJ articles accuse Dr. Andrew Wakefield of committing scientific fraud in a 1998 Lancet publication – http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140673697110960/fulltext – he co-authored that brought global attention to a link many parents and physicians suspect may exist between autism and children who are genetically predisposed to adverse reactions from the Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

The BMJ, Deer, and Godlee alleged that Wakefield fabricated a diagnosis of colitis in most of the 12 children described in The Lancet article – calling Wakefield’s work an “elaborate fraud” intended to create an “MMR scare” – so Wakefield could profit from a patent related to his research.

“Documents recovered from Dr. Wakefield’s files during my investigation at the National Whistleblowers Center (NWC) – www.researchmisconduct.org – reveal that a pathologist associated with the study, Dr. Andrew Anthony, interpreted a number of the children’s biopsies as evidence of colitis,” explained Dr. Lewis. “Altogether, the evidence contained in Wakefield’s files suggested to me that the BMJ’s fraud theory was more tabloid news than science.”

According to documents Lewis filed with Sir John Tooke, Vice-Provost for Health at the University College London (UCL) where The Lancet study was done, BMJ Editor Godlee responded to the Lewis revelations by “cherry-picking the evidence and coming up with a grand conspiracy theory involving ‘institutional research misconduct’. Alleged fraudsters now include University College London (UCL) administrators, the Royal Free Hospital, and all 13 co-authors of the Lancet study.”

UCL President Malcolm Grant notified Lewis that, because his charges were “so serious,” he urged Dr. Lewis to inform Dr. Godlee and Deer “at the earliest opportunity.”

Lewis also reports that Godlee has previously acknowledged the BMJ Group receives funding from the two manufacturers of the MMR vaccine, Merck and GlaxoSmithKline, and has testified in a Parliamentary inquiry that peer-reviewed medical journals are “the marketing arm of the pharmaceutical industry.” Lewis added: “Apparently scientists who question certain government policies and industry practices can be destroyed for a price. If so, this kind of tabloid science poses a genuine threat to public health.”

On January 3, 2012, Dr. Wakefield filed suit against the BMJ and Brian Deer ( http://www.courthousenews.com/2012/01/04/BritMedJ.pdf ). Last September, Columbia University published a major study supporting the link Dr. Wakefield established between autism and enterocolitis ( http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3174969/ ).

WILLITS, Calif., Nov. 15, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Survey4Water, a full service water resource company, announced this week that it is taking an old technology – active sonar – and applying it to a new use – locating underground water.

Sonar (SOund Navigation And Ranging) uses sound propagation to detect and locate. Passive sonar pertains to “listening only” and active sonar, defined as “emitting and listening,” was developed nearly 100 years ago.

Survey4Water’s very low frequency, portable, waist-carried active sonar equipment reads the electromagnetic fields in the ground, down to a depth of 100 meters. Processing this data with computer software, a technician then produces a vertical plot of the survey on site, marking potential drill targets as he goes.

“Active Sonar is a tried-and-true technology, but its survey for water application is new, and highly successful,” says Ron Hymes, a water surveyor for Survey4Water. “With great certainty, our system allows us to ‘see’ underground water and to ensure its presence. In turn, this technology pinpoints where to drill or not to drill.”

And, while surveying for water is inexpensive, drilling a water well is expensive. So, this newly-applied technology proves invaluable. It minimizes risk and maximizes the client’s ability to have a productive well.

“In fact, many of our clients ask for our opinion after they have already hired dowsers and witchers,” adds Hymes.

About Survey4Water:
By using state-of-the-art equipment, Survey4Water offers pricing starting at just $500.00 which rivals the non-scientific methods. Its methods are proven to get the best results for the best price.

Its clients include homeowners; land owners; developers; REALTORS® and property owners; farmers and ranchers; utility companies; engineering firms; investors and well drillers.

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 18, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — According to Dr. William Griffith, a recently published article in the Journal of Applied Physics announces the discovery of a new electro-magnetic wave technology – tentatively referred to as “3D TAP,” created by Dr. Griffith – that could dramatically change the way we understand the world around us.

This wave technology, which exploits microwaves in a way previously un-seen in science, works by producing “magneto-static spin waves” into open space and analyzing how those waves are affected by the materials they come into contact with.

For those familiar with the spectrograph commonly used in astronomy – which determines the elemental make-up of celestial objects based on how those objects affect light passing through them – this is not an entirely unfamiliar concept. In fact there are a number of devices already in use that work in similar ways in a variety of fields. What makes this new technology so special is its ability to analyze a sample immediately and without interfering with it at all.

As Dr. William Griffith, the creator of this technology, explains, “Transmitted electromagnetic waves will respond to electric or magnetic fields. Such fields are typical within most materials and are caused by how the atoms and molecules are structured. Changes within the transmitted electromagnetic spin wave as it moves through the material are recorded and used to identify specific material, chemical, and physical properties – without ever tampering with that initial sample.”

Classic Sci-Fi fans might immediately recognize the applications of this technology. While current non-invasive medical devices might require a thin tissue – say, an earlobe – to send waves through and determine vital signs, this technology introduces the ability to scan immediately, non-invasively, and anywhere on the body a physician might want. With proper R&D, this new technology may one day in the near future be combined with smart-phones to create scanners capable of analyzing vital-signs – or maybe anything else around us – with a quick point of the phone.

This technology can be applied within nearly any analytical process requiring identification of chemical and physical properties – industrial applications include extremely rapid analysis of process intermediates or products, medical applications include non-invasive chemical profiling of fluids and tissues, and a range of industry-specific applications also apply to address needs within research, defense, and other fields.

For more information regarding individual or corporate sponsorship opportunities and technology specifics, contact Dr. Griffith by email directly. Please be sure to include relevant background information on yourself and/or your organization. Benefactor anonymity and privacy are assured. No information about respondents will be divulged without their permission.

LIPA CITY, Philippines, June 2, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — A multi-national coalition of researchers has been formed to study and treat a massive fish kill of over 800 metric tonnes which started on May 27 in Taal Lake, in the Philippine province of Batangas. Sponsored by the World Mind Network, it will involve on-site as well as online cooperation between biology students in the U.S. and the Philippines, as well as volunteers from Batangas State University and local schools.

Some of the team members worked previously on water quality problems after Typhoon Onday in Metro Manila two years ago. They pioneered a method of solving public health crises which involves linking cell networks, Twitter and Facebook trackers, and teams to monitor and forward SMS messages between and among victims and authorities.

The team includes Brandon Seeley and John Toomey, founding directors of the World Mind Network, former consultants for the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, AP Biology students at Apponequet Regional High School in Massachusetts, and volunteers from the fraternity Batangas Varsitarian. On-site volunteers will take water and fish samples, and test them for oxygen content, toxins, salinity, and the presence of hydrogen sulfide and toxic sulfur compounds.

This is the biggest fish kill in Taal Lake since 2008, when 54 metric tonnes of milkfish died in a similar way. Authorities say the dying may continue for a month or more, depending upon the weather.

Several theories exist to explain the die-off. The predominant one is that the beginning of the rainy season lowered oxygen levels in the lake. A problem with this is that the rainy season happens at about the same time every year, and yet fish kills like this one are very rare.

Some believe that overfeeding of commercial fish cages caused the die-off. Others think that increased emissions of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur from the Taal volcano may be a factor. These were noticed during earlier fish kills. The team plans to make its findings available to fishermen and local authorities as soon as possible so that appropriate responses can be implemented.

ALAMEDA, Calif., Dec. 7 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Sixth grade science students at the Alameda Community Learning Center will take on the roles of real-life environmental scientists this school year, thanks to a collaboration with Save the Bay and grant support from Bio-Rad. Using the Pasco SPARK system of dataloggers to enable remote collection of pH, salinity, and ORP data, learners will conduct a geochemical and microbiological survey of two native plant restoration areas in the SF Bay.

The analysis will provide a map of pH, salinity, and oxidation/reduction potential, which will be used by the Save the Bay organization to select the optimal plants for each area. The final project results will be presented to Save the Bay in the spring of 2011, in the form of GIS constructed maps with embedded geochemical and microbiological data.

The Alameda Community Learning Center is located on San Francisco Bay, a short distance from Save the Bay’s Damon Marsh native plant restoration areas. On a field trip to help plant native plants, students learned that the salinity and pH of the soil is influenced by tidal and rainfall patterns together with the flow of water from the nearby creek. As a result, it is hard to predict which plants will do well in any specific area.

Curious about whether they could assist in the plant restoration effort by creating a map of soil conditions that could be used to guide plant selection, ACLC Science Facilitator Milt Friedman and his class partnered with Save the Bay and applied for financial support from Bio-Rad, a Hercules, CA based company, to bring the project to life.

About the ACLC, Save the Bay and Bio-Rad:

SANTA ANA, Calif. (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The latest advancements in astronomy, the availability of 3D maps of the galaxies, reveal a new structure for our universe. These maps show patterns in the distribution of the galaxies indicating a universe that is not expanding at all. These patterns in galaxy groups begin within our nearby galaxies and continue outward as far as we can see. The discovery was made by a small team of independent scientists, led by researcher Richard Moser, a prominent thermodynamicist and includes brother David Moser, a mathematician and amateur astronomer who have both have decades of experience in this field.

Just as centuries ago the invention of the telescope revealed new information to Copernicus and Galileo that changed the conception of our solar system, the invention of the computer and recently developed compilation of large databases containing the actual three dimensional locations of thousands of galaxies reaching out hundreds of millions of light-years have shown a new structure for the universe. These databases can be seen by anyone with a computer and are available in several commercially available 3D astronomy programs.

This new information reveals that the universe is fixed in size and has a definite shape. “We live in a very large mirrored room, a cave, with almost perfectly reflecting curved walls,” says thermodynamicist Richard Moser.

“This universe is a closed, reflective room or cave. We are about 1.5 million light-years to the closest wall where we can see the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) as the reflection of our own Milky Way Galaxy as it looked several million years ago. The far wall is about six to eight million light-years away in the direction of the Virgo Cluster.”

After the nearby reflective wall in the direction of Andromeda, a second wall has been determined in the direction of M83 but there remains much analytical work to do before more walls are discovered. That research will not involve telescopes but will use techniques of computer analysis similar to the ray-tracing programs currently used to simulate accurate light reflections in our best computer-generated movies.

Galaxy clusters are described by astronomers as the largest known structures in the universe and they can now be seen to actually be the entire universe. Repeated images of these galaxy clusters are seen reflected over and over and appear as long foamy walls of galaxy bubbles extending outward.

BOSTON, Mass. (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The recently announced proposal is a dramatic departure from the Constellation Program, scrapping the Ares I and Ares V launch vehicles, as well as the Orion capsule. Instead, the administration has proposed a program that would increase funding for robotic science missions, private sector development of space hardware for transporting people to and from low Earth orbit, technology development, international cooperation, and many other projects. Explore Mars (www.exploremars.org) is supportive of investment in these programs.

We are particularly pleased to see that the administration’s plan specifically refers to the necessity of a heavy lift launch vehicle. Without such a vehicle, the United States will not be able to mount any significant exploration of the solar system, and will be unable to send humans to Mars.

We believe, however, that the new plan lacks focus as it does not provide any development schedule for proposed new technologies, such as a heavy lift launch vehicle, and does not mention any firm destinations.

“The program needs to be better defined,” said Explore Mars Executive Director, Chris Carberry. “Without a firm destination for human space flight, such as Mars, and without an ambitious timeline, any significant goals will be difficult to achieve.” This is particularly relevant in light of a recent comment by NASA Administrator, Charles Bolden, who stated that Mars should be the ultimate goal of the United States space program.

Explore Mars believes that in order to achieve this stated goal, NASA must establish a plan for the development of a heavy lift vehicle within the next eight years, and commit to landing humans on Mars no later than 2030.

If these bold steps are not taken, the United States will fall behind other nations in space exploration. While Explore Mars enthusiastically supports international cooperation, the United States must remain a leader in these vital national endeavors.

As NASA, Congress, and the Obama administration begin the process of filling in the details of this new space program, we urge them to work together to build a truly ambitious program that inspires the country and transcends national borders.

BOSTON, Mass. (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — We are pleased to announce the formation of Explore Mars, Inc. (www.exploremars.org). Explore Mars is a project oriented group that was created to promote science and technology innovation and education with a use for Mars Exploration. Through a series of technology innovation awards, scientific symposiums and workshops, Mars analog work, technology demonstrations, and other programs, we provide a platform for scientists and “citizen scientists” to engage in meaningful space exploration research and development in the private sector.

In the first half of 2010, Explore Mars will launch a series of technology development challenges relating to Mars exploration, with prizes ranging from $10,000 – $100,000. There has been a common misconception that any sort of Mars prize would require billions of dollars to launch. In reality, there are an enormous number of technologies and processes that need to be developed before we send humans to Mars. Many of these technologies can be developed now and for less than $100,000. Teaming with Aerojet Corporation and others, the first of these challenges will focus on in situ resource utilization – technologies that will allows us to “live off the land” on other planets.

The new focus on private sector investment in space creates a unique opportunity for Explore Mars. “Not only do we plan to promote the humans to Mars cause,” said Explore Mars Executive Director, Chris Carberry, “but with the right mix of prizes, programming, and projects, we can make a significant contribution in advancing the cause of sending humans to Mars.”

In addition, collaborating with Aerojet and NASA’s Spaceward Bound, we will be creating the Mars Education Challenge that will challenge educators to design new and innovative Mars curriculum. We hope this curricula will inspire more students to become interested in space exploration.

According to Explore Mars President, Artemis Westenberg, “Inspiring young people is a wonderful way of creating your own best future. Teaching them about all space exploration has to offer them will bring about innovation useful to Earth and Mars.”

Explore Mars will also be running a series of scientific and engineering workshops and symposiums, with a Mars agriculture workshop tentatively scheduled to take place in the spring of 2011.

Explore Mars plans to announce details of at least two prizes in the first half of 2010. The Explore Mars team includes individuals such as Apollo 11 Astronaut, Buzz Aldrin; NASA Planetary scientist, Dr. Chris McKay; Space historian, Andy Chaikin; former Biosphere 2 director of science and research, Bruno D.V. Marino; and many others. Explore Mars will provide additional details on these programs in the near future as it ambitiously starts moving ahead on these exciting new endeavors.
