AUSTIN, Minn., Feb. 20, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Allweather Roof, based in Minneapolis is proud to announce the hiring of Tracy Riedemann as the new General Manager of its Austin operations. Riedemann brings more than 18 years of commercial roofing experience and has worked on more than 10,000 roofing projects in her career. She has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in roofing repairs, modifications, and re-roofing that adds to Allweather Roof’s Southern branch.

Riedemann is originally from Lake City and is proud to be serving her native Southern Minnesota. She specializes in service, roof maintenance, and repairing roofs that other estimators might give up on. “I love telling a client that I can save their roof,” she said. This saves her clients money and has earned her a reputation of being fair and honest.

Taking care of customers is what brought her to Allweather Roof. She explained the appreciation for the customers and the care and concern for the customers really attracted her to the company.

Riedemann hasn’t come across too many women on the branch manager level in her field, which allows her to tell more men what to do, she joked. She said that she is excited to be pioneer in the industry and loves being out on a roof giving clients great service.

“Although it is rare for a woman to hold a branch manager position, in a primarily male dominated industry, we knew we were getting the best person for the job,” said Ken Sorensen, president of Allweather Roof. “She understands how roofs perform and how ongoing maintenance can extend the life of a good roof.”

Allweather Roof specializes in Rubber (EPDM), Built-up (BUR), Thermoplastic Poly Olefin (TPO), Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC), Modified Bitumen, and Coatings for industrial roofing projects in Minn. and throughout the Midwest.

ST. PAUL, Minn., Dec. 5, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — On December 6, 2011, global education non-profit World Savvy, the Institute for Global Citizenship at Macalester College, and the Minnesota Humanities Center are sponsoring “Citizenship in a Sound Bite Era,” a community forum among a range of individuals and organizations around Minnesota working to educate and engage young people for informed, responsible and sustained citizenship in the sound bite era.

For more information about the event, visit www.worldsavvy.org/events .

In an age where the half life of information is shrinking daily and where news is produced more to entertain than to inform, engaging citizens in sustained dialogue and action is more challenging than ever. While it’s easier than ever before to take simple actions – to “like” a cause or forward an e-mail-are we preparing the next generation of citizens to really explore and think critically about issues, and embrace the complexity of the range of issues that challenge society? Or are we becoming a Sound Bite society and citizenry? On Tuesday December 6th, stakeholders from across the business, non-profit and government sectors will come together at Macalester College to share their thoughts and perspectives on this and other questions related to building an informed, engaged citizenry in the 21st century.

Panelists include Mark Ritchie, Minnesota Secretary of State, Brian Rosenberg, President of Macalester College, Dana Mortenson, Executive Director of World Savvy, Jamal Thompson, Director of Education at the National Black MBA Association of the Twin Cities, and Trista Harris, Executive Director of the Headwaters Foundation for Justice.

Speakers will explore what citizenship looks like in a world where communities can no longer be defined strictly by geographic borders. They will share their thoughts on what knowledge and skills are required for citizenship in an era dominated by sound bites, social media and issues that cross borders of all forms. The audience will then have a chance to participate in the dialogue and share their own thoughts and perspectives on this critical issue.

The upcoming generation of stakeholders and leaders has unprecedented opportunity to both produce and consume information and media, and how we define engagement – in our democracy, in society, locally and globally – is evolving every day. This forum will explore what is working and what needs to change to ensure that the next generation of leaders and changemakers are prepared to address the challenges of the 21st century.

ST. PAUL, Minn., Feb. 23 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — On Saturday, March 5, 2011, nearly 600 middle and high school students, teachers, volunteers, parents, and community leaders from around the Twin Cities will convene at Macalester College in St. Paul to participate in Minnesota’s Third Annual World Affairs Challenge™, hosted by global education non-profit World Savvy in partnership with Macalester College’s Institute for Global Citizenship.

The theme for this year’s World Affairs Challenge™ is “Food: Feeding the World Sustainably in the 21st Century.” More than 1,200 students from 24 schools around the Twin Cities have been working for the past several months to research and develop solutions to issues as diverse as the environmental impact of food production to the impact of food prices on global hunger. On March 5th, nearly 300 of these students will share their perspectives on these important issues with their peers and adults who serve as observers and judges.

Challenge Day, the culminating competition of the World Affairs Challenge™, will kick off at 9 AM in Macalester’s Kagin Ballroom with opening remarks from Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak followed by a Keynote address from Secretary of State Mark Richie. These leaders will share with students why the work they are doing to develop sustainable solutions to issues like hunger, agriculture and nutrition is so critical. Minnesota is home to over 80,000 farms. While almost 27,000,000 million acres of land is used for agriculture, 1 in 10 people are going hungry in the Twin Cities. There is no question that food is a critical local issue.

The World Affairs Challenge presents a unique opportunity for students to study this global issue with significant local implications by exploring a variety of perspectives and working with their peers to develop creative local, national and global solutions.

During the day, students will present their research and solutions to judges from the community in the form of formal presentations and visual solutions showcases, on display throughout the day in the Kagin Ballroom at Macalester. Students will also participate in a collaborative problem-solving activity that challenges their teamwork, critical thinking and communication skills. The day will close at 3:30 PM with an Awards Ceremony, where students will receive recognition for their work.

World Savvy launched the World Affairs Challenge program in the Twin Cities in 2008 after six successful years in San Francisco. Despite the current economic recession, this program continues to grow in Minnesota and has more than tripled in size over the past three years. Program sponsors include Wallace Genetic Foundation, the Xcel Energy Foundation, the General Mills Foundation, the Pentair Foundation, the Best Buy Children’s Foundation, RSP Architects, and Minnesota Public Radio.

ELY, Minn., Jan. 12 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Preparations are underway for the 17th annual Ely Winter Festival slated for February 3-13, 2011, in the northern Minnesota tourist city known for its local beauty and wilderness. The volunteer Board has announced a schedule of events with something for all ages and interests, ranging from the annual Mukluk Ball, Sled Dog Rides, and historic Voyageur Encampment, to a crafts fair, ice fishing contest, food events, and the Ely ArtWalk taking place over the Festival’s 10-day period.

The cornerstone of the Festival is the International Snow Sculpting Symposium in the town’s Whiteside Park with 20 smaller “amateur” blocks and 20 large “expert” blocks, each carved by a three-person team. “We have about 60 snow carvers, both local and some who travel here each year just for this event,” said Chris Ellerbroek, co-director of the Symposium. “This year we have a theme, ‘Mythology and Folklore,’ so we’re looking forward to seeing the creative interpretations brought by the carvers.”

Alongside the carvers in the park is an authentic Voyageur Encampment, with the participants in historic garb camping out over the three-day weekend.

The downtown area of the town becomes a veritable art gallery, as merchants clear their windows to display local artists’ works in the Ely ArtWalk, which also runs over the 10 days of the Festival. Over 450 pieces of art by 120 artists will be displayed this year.

The Festival kicks off with the “Snow Carvers Jam” on Thursday night, February 3, at the Ely Steak House. Some of the visiting carvers bring their instruments and join in with local musicians for a night of shared musical fun.

The Kizer Foundation hosts a Spaghetti Feed on Friday evening, February 3, and co-hosts with the Ely JayCees a WinterFest Dance on Saturday night, February 4. The events benefit the Foundation, which helps area residents with medical financial burdens.

During the day on Saturday, February 5, is the NLAA crafts fair, a fish fry at Veterans-on-the-Lake Resort, and a “Friends of the Trezona Trail” meet and greet at Northern Grounds sponsored by the Nordic Ski Club. Skiing the trail is encouraged, with equipment rental available next door at Piragis Northwoods Company. Fishermen and women can gather at the Grand Ely Lodge for the first annual Ely Rotary Ice Fishing Classic (TERIFC) for big prizes and lots of fun.

Also on Saturday, Vermilion Community College holds an open house, the Dorothy Molter Museum is open for visits and the Ely ArtWalk holds its official opening at the Chocolate Moose.

Both Sundays of the Festival, Northern Lights Lodge hosts dog sled rides for the whole family. The Amateur Snow Carving Contest is judged on Sunday morning, February 6.

On Wednesday, mid-week of the Festival, the Energy Efficient Ely (E3) hosts a panel discussion at 5:30PM in Vermilion Community College Rm 104.

The second weekend of the Festival is packed with events as well. For outdoor and history enthusiasts, on Friday morning, February 11, Outward Bound guides a group to the Hegman Lake Native American Pictographs by snowshoe. Friday begins a long weekend event by the International Wolf Center, “Mush with Dogs, Howl with Wolves.”

Saturday night, February 12, Steger Mukluks presents the Lamont Cranston Blues Band playing at the annual Mukluk Ball, hosted by owner Patti Steger and Broadcasting Hall of Famer, former anchor and reporter of Minneapolis station WCCO-TV, Don Shelby. The Mukluk Ball will be held at the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa’s Fortune Bay Resort Casino near Tower, MN. Bus service is being provided from Ely.

Also on Saturday night is the Dorothy Molter Museum fundraising dinner at Grand Ely Lodge. Entertainment and prizes will be offered.

Festival pins, T-shirts, beanies, brochures and information are available at the Festival Headquarters, the Front Porch Coffee and Tea Co., which has free Wi-Fi for customers’ laptops and computer rental time available, as well as organic hot beverages and light, healthy food.

Up-to-the-minute details on events and Festival news can be found on the Festival’s website ElyWinterFestival.com. Of special interest is the gallery, containing video and still shots of past years’ snow sculptures.
“I am extremely excited and humbled to have these three very accomplished individuals join our board. As we move from a ‘proof-of-concept’ business to a ‘fully-implemented’ one, I am very confident that our newly expanded board will be invaluable in ensuring we are prepared for long-term success,” said DesignWise Medical’s founder and Chairman Brad Slaker.

Ann Johnson is the director of the Center for Nonprofit Management in the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas. She has 30 years of nonprofit leadership and management experience in addition to expertise in professional training and curriculum development. She has served as an executive for health care, education, advocacy and grassroots organizations. In addition to her director of research and public policy role, Ann is the director of the Institute for Executive Director Leadership cohort for nonprofit executives. She also is a recognized speaker and presenter offering keynote presentations and training seminars nationally, regionally, and locally with a focus on board and executive development and nonprofit effectiveness.

Jim Hartman served as the chief executive of Enpath Medical, Inc. and its predecessor company, MedAmicus, Inc., from 1994 to his retirement in January 2006. He served as board chairman from 1994 to 2007, at which time the company was sold. He also served as chief financial officer from 1991 until his retirement. Enpath developed and manufactured medical devices for the vascular and cardiology markets. Jim serves on the board of two publicly traded companies, NVE Corp, and WSI Industries, Inc. He has an MBA from the University of St. Thomas and is a non-practicing CPA.

Tom McGoldrick served as chief executive officer of Monteris Medical Inc. from November 2002 until he retired in November 2005.
One of the first activities of the newly expanded board will be implementing DesignWise Medical’s Charter Campaign, a one-time sponsorship opportunity for individuals and organizations to join DesignWise Medical in developing appropriate medical devices for children.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., Oct. 18 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — DesignWise Medical, a nonprofit pediatric device organization, announced today that it has applied for its first patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Formal application was prepared in cooperation with the William Mitchell School of Law Intellectual Property Clinic.

DesignWise Medical’s Overnight Pediatric Oxygen Delivery (OPOD) system is a fully non-contacting method of delivering supplemental overnight oxygen to children with chronic lung conditions. The OPOD System is comprised of a hood structure that effectively incorporates a number of strategically positioned gas ports that direct oxygen to a resting patient. The hood directs volume of oxygen flow through gas ports that are optimized by sensors, which detect patient position, facial orientation, or other environmental or patient conditions. The benefit of a non-contacting supplemental oxygen system is that it totally eliminates interference or difficulties with nasal tubing, facemasks, straps, tape, etc.

“Some infants and children have chronic lung conditions that require supplemental oxygen delivery at night to keep their blood oxygen levels within normal ranges. The supplemental oxygen is not for life support, but it is crucial to maintain normal growth and to prevent pulmonary hypertension, which is a common complication of chronic hypoxemia. The challenge is that most of these children do not comply well with having nasal tubes taped to their face, so this makes administering oxygen very difficult,” said Brad Slaker, Founder and CEO of DesignWise Medical.

DesignWise Medical is currently in the process of securing philanthropic funds from individuals, corporations and foundations to finalize the development of the OPOD System and continue developing several other pediatric solutions.

DesignWise Medical collaborated with the William Mitchell School of Law to draft and develop its patent application for the OPOD System. “DesignWise Medical exists because children’s needs are not being addressed in the mainstream medical device industry. We partnered with DesignWise on this project because we saw an opportunity to enhance our student curriculum, while also helping children resolve a critical healthcare need,” said Professor Jay Erstling, director of William Mitchell College of Law’s Intellectual Property Clinic.
