WASHINGTON, D.C., March 12, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — “The Easter Bunny That Grew Up” (ISBN: 978-1-4685-5496-0) is a children’s book that pays tribute to a little rabbit that captured the hearts of people around the world on Facebook and the contributions he made to rabbits in rescues and shelters. On September 26th, 2010 Gretta Parker started a journey she was not planning on when she adopted a little white rabbit for $7.50 from a local shelter.

On a whim she made him a Facebook page where she could talk about adopting rabbits and rabbit care. She posted adoption ads and wrote about how Flopsy loved to flip things. She started making adoption awareness posters using his image. People began to share them and his page. Gretta told her family and friends that he was going to be the $7.50 rabbit that changed the world for all rabbits.

By 2011, Flopsy Parker had become a household name for his humor, his message of adoption and his honesty about how much care rabbits need. He was even quoted by the Wall Street Journal when he was outraged over the Royal Shakespeare Company using real dead rabbits in their stage productions.

Gretta taught herself how to make designs with his images and started a store on Cafepress using Flopsy’s image and her designs that sent the message that shelter bunnies are the best kind. She donated the proceeds to a different rabbit rescue each month. In the summer of 2011, Gretta pooled all her savings to start Baskets for Bunnies, Inc. a 501(c) non-profit that sends supplies to rabbit rescues on a monthly basis. Flopsy was of course the “spokesbunny.”

Flopsy not only inspired her to do more but he had become her teacher to the issues that rabbits face. The truth is rabbits are the third most abandoned animal in the United States but they do not get the funding or protection they need due to agricultural laws that govern them. She set her sights to changing this. By fall 2011, she started making plans to get funding for a nationwide spay and neuter program for rabbits.

In December 2011, with the help of a rabbit toy company called Pet Rabbit Toys she started Toys for Hops; a program to raise toys to send to rabbits in rescues in shelters. In less than 16 days, with the support of all of Flopsy’s Facebook fans they raised 2,000 toys that went to rescues and shelters all over the United States by Christmas.

On the evening of December 28th Flopsy Parker passed away suddenly from a congenital kidney defect. His Facebook page got so many posts that it shut his timeline down in less than 24 hours. People posting how he had influenced them to adopt, or how he made them laugh. His mother received letters from all over the world, all people who had been touched by a $7.50 rabbit that another family had chosen to give up. Gretta had been right he had started to change the world for rabbits.

To cope with her grief, Gretta Parker wrote a book called “The Easter Bunny That Grew Up” as a tribute to his short but big life. She decided that death would not be the end of their journey together but the beginning of a new one. Flopsy would always be her partner, son, best friend and continue to lead her to fight for the rights of rabbits. The book teaches about researching an animal’s care needs before buying, supporting rabbit rescues, and that sometimes the greatest treasures are the ones other people discard.

His mother plans to use the proceeds from the book to continue the work of Baskets for Bunnies, Inc. and to build a sanctuary in Flopsy’s name. The Flopsy Parker Memorial Sanctuary will house rabbits with behavioral or health issues and elderly rabbits. It will truly be the sanctuary that a mother’s love built.

HOUSTON, Texas, March 5, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Rockwood Enterprises, Inc., a six-year-old Houston-based marketing and publishing company, announced today the launch of an audio book version of “Equinomics 101″ – a management and record keeping system designed to teach horse owners and horse-related businesses how to efficiently manage their finances.

According to the American Horse Council, there are approximately 9.2 million horses in the U.S. used for racing, showing, competition, sport, breeding, recreation and work.

Richard B. Dicks, CPA, equine businessman and author, developed Equinomics 101 to provide a down-to-earth, practical cash and financial management system for horse lovers and small to mid-sized horse-related business owners. Written in an instructional, how-to format, Equinomics 101 reveals what records matter to accountants and the IRS.

The book and software have been very popular in the commercial market place and last year Equinomics 101 was converted into an accredited college course that is now being taught in many leading colleges and universities. Because of today’s busy schedules, most people don’t have ample spare time to read.

By popular request, Equinomics 101 has now been converted into an audio book version for smartphones and CDs and is being released today. The audible book contains 15 chapters of conceptual subject matter that is great for listening to and 5 technical chapters that contain forms and graphs that can be easily accessed through the Equinomics 101 website.

Read by Terry Rose, the 6-CD audio book is informative and easy to listen to and quite enjoyable. The listener will come away with many valuable ideas that can immediately be used in their equine operation.

“Most horse owners practice ‘pitchfork accounting,’” Dicks explained. “They throw everything in a box and hand it over to their CPA. Equinomics 101 is designed to help customers change these destructive financial patterns.” The audio book is designed for horse owners but the information and concepts are also useful for anyone with cattle, alpacas, goats, and other livestock.

According to Dicks, the key to avoiding financial loss is to run the horse operation like a business. Equinomics 101 instructs horse owners on how to minimize hobby-loss.

“Like a good saddle, it’s a tool that no horseman should be without,” Dicks said.

In 2005, the American Horse Council conducted a study that dispelled the misperception that the horse industry is an activity reserved for the wealthy. The horse industry is, in fact, a diverse activity with stakeholders including recreational and show horse riders, and moderate-income track, show and stable employees and volunteers.

Approximately 34 percent of horse owners have a household income of less than $50,000; 28 percent exceed $100,000. 46 percent of horse owners have an income between $25,000 and $75,000.

Equinomics 101 can also be used as a simple record and bookkeeping system, a check register system, or an easy-to-use contact management system. In addition, it also addresses barter and like-kind exchange, equine tax issues, depreciation, and investment analysis.

NEPTUNE CITY, N.J., Feb. 10, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Leave it to Nylabone®, the makers of safe, healthy chews since 1955, to combine a dog’s two favorite pastimes – playing and eating – into one great new product line: Romp’n Chomp™ Treat Toys. The new line, available in pet specialty stores this spring, makes treats last longer while keeping dogs entertained and promoting safe, healthy chewing.

“Pet parents have made it clear that they want quality, value and safety in their dogs’ play products,” says Mike Connelly, Vice President of Marketing for Nylabone® Products based in Neptune City, N.J. “The new Romp’n Chomp™ Treat Toys are essentially toys which offer unlimited play value, and can also be filled with our natural, made-in-the-USA treats. The marriage of treat and toy helps to extend the value and life of the treats over a longer period of time.”

He adds that filling the durable and long-lasting toys with treats or kibble allows pet parents to use the toys as rewards for training and behavior reinforcement. Furthermore, healthy chewing helps keeps a dog’s teeth in tip-top shape.

Treat Toys Varieties:
The new Freezer Bone features a snap-in Nylabone treat shaped like Nylabone’s classic Souper. Great for teething puppies as well as dogs of all sizes, the bone has fill n’ freeze corners for added fun. Available in two sizes and made in the USA, it encourages appropriate chewing and its ridges help to clean teeth.

The fun and inventive Shish-Ka-Bone is an interchangeable treat holder with chicken flavored nylon ends and nylon center. It features chew disks that slide on to the middle of the toy for added chewing fun. Dogs can’t get the toys apart thanks to the safety lock mechanism that holds the chew disks in place. Providing longer-lasting fun and chewing for powerful chewers, this innovative toy has textured nubs for added dental benefits. It is available in two sizes to suite all size dogs, and replacement disks are available.

The Souper Treat Toy is made to look like Nylabone’s popular Souper, but features a snap-in treat bar. Designed with power-chewers in mind, this new made-in-the-USA treat toy satisfies a dog’s natural chewing instincts.

It spins, it wobbles, it helps clean teeth and massage gums: it’s the rubber Triple Treat Toy! Featuring snap-in Nylabone exclusive treats shaped like the popular Nylabone Souper, this ingenious three-armed toy will keep dogs occupied longer! Made in the USA, it encourages independent play and helps promote good dental health.

What says dog more than fetching a stick? Dogs love retrieving and chewing on sticks, so Nylabone created the rubber Hollow Stick Treat Toy. Like a stick found outside, it’s an easy shape for dogs to grasp, and it provides hours of interactive play and retrieval. This stick, however, has a hollow core that can be filled with a Nylabone Treat Bar. And, like other Nylabone products, chewing on this stick will massage gums and help clean teeth.

The rubber Treat Ball is a versatile toy that’s great for toss-and-play fun. It has shape pockets that can be filled with peanut butter and interior spaces for a variety of Nylabone treats like the Treat Bars, Healthy Edible Chews, or Treat Bits.

Finally, the rubber Wobbler Treat Toy is sure to please all dogs! Fill the center with Nylabone Treat Bars or Healthy Edible Chews. Or, smear the hollows with peanut butter and freeze it for longer-lasting play. With a weighted-bottom, the toy wobbles and is easy to grip yet its space-capsule shape makes for erratic bouncing fun. This is one treat toy that is sure to please!

The new Nylabone® Romp’n Chomp™ Treat Toys and refill treats, disks, bars and treat bits will be available in pet specialty stores this spring, with suggested retail prices ranging from $4.09 to $30.99.

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 8, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Bio-Medical Services has received USDA approval and is now offering allergy drop immunotherapy as an alternative method for administering allergy treatment for pet allergy patients. An in-house pilot study is now underway, and preliminary findings are expected in the Fall of 2012.

“With two options for immunotherapy, we can now better tailor treatment to the temperament of the patient, and lifestyle of the pet owner,” says Dr. Susan Keesee, Chief Scientific Officer at Bio-Medical Services. “This will allow more patients to receive the allergy treatment they need.”

Bio-Medical Services has been following the use of sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops) in humans as an alternative method for administering allergy treatment. Allergy drops have been widely used in Europe, and are now gaining favor in the U.S.; the first randomized trial in humans was conducted in 1986 with proven efficacy. In a 2010 study conducted by the University of Wisconsin Veterinary School, sublingual immunotherapy was shown to be effective in reducing symptoms and allergen-specific IgE levels in dogs as well (*Note 1). Allergy drops are now being offered for canine allergy treatment by a select few veterinary teaching hospitals. “Because of its proven efficacy in humans, and early success shown in canines, we feel confident that sublingual immunotherapy is a safe and effective treatment modality,” says Keesee.

As the gap between human and veterinary medicine narrows, Bio-Medical Services remains in the forefront of serum allergy testing and treatment, providing the most current and effective medicine for pet allergy patients. Bio-Medical Services has achieved many “firsts” in the care of pet allergies. They were the first to offer ELISA serum testing for canine, feline and equine patients.

In 2004, Bio-Medical services was the first to introduce the practice of separating mold, mite and insect allergens into separate treatment from pollen, fiber and epithelia allergens to the veterinary field – following the convention used in human allergy treatment. Currently, Bio-Medical Services is the only laboratory to offer five treatment protocols based on the patient’s age, weight, breed, species, and clinical history. And now with two options for administering immunotherapy, patients receive even more customized and effective care for pet allergies.

About Bio-Medical Services:

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Feb. 2, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Eswan Flores wanted to give back to the non-profit organization, FixNation, that worked to control the cat population at the Los Alamitos Race Course where he began his horse-racing career so he decided to sponsor them.

FixNation is a non-profit organization that offers free spaying and neutering of stray and feral cats in the greater Los Angeles area.

“They’ve been very helpful in controlling the cat population at the Los Alamitos Race Course and people will soon see their logo on my pants,” says Flores. “What a great way to combine my compassion for cats and horse racing.”

It was reported that several hundred homeless cats and kittens were living at the racetrack. To date, approximately 100 have been spayed and neutered.

Training was provided to teach Flores and his manager how to humanely and safely trap the cats. Their compassion was clearly embraced by other racetrack employees who also care for the cats.

“FixNation has made horse racing history while bringing smiles to our faces, specifically by having our logo worn by jockey Flores,” says Karn Myers, clinic director/founder/COO of FixNation, Inc. “I simply cannot thank Flores enough for being so supportive of our organization and raising public awareness.”

Elizabeth Cava, a trapping trainer at FixNation, adds that, “It was so reassuring to see that they sought out a humane solution – a life-based solution – rather than the only other alternative – trap and kill.”

About Eswan Flores:
Flores is an 18-year old high school senior and a native of Mexico. He started going to the track in Santa Anita when he was eight while his father worked as a groom. At 10, he would ride his bike to the Arcadia track, studying horses. Friends and family took him to ride at ranches. He is quickly making a name for himself in thoroughbred horse racing at one of the most premier tracks in the country. He has been interviewed by multiple entities including: the Los Angeles Times; PBS and Fox News.

About FixNation:
FixNation, Inc., a non-profit corporation, has a mission to reduce the population of homeless cats by sterilizing as many as possible. In addition, by consistently demonstrating the effectiveness of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), it seeks to bring about changes in public policy so that TNR becomes the officially sanctioned and government-funded approach to homeless cat management. It supports and promotes all humane initiatives and education to bring about the day of “No More Homeless Cats in L.A.”

NEPTUNE CITY, N.J., Jan. 5, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Consumers in the Southeast United States are the first in the country to gobble up the new, all-natural GRAIN-FREE DOG BISCUITS from Nylabone, the makers of safe, healthy chews since 1955. Nylabone has partnered with Costco Warehouses from Florida to North Carolina and Tennessee to market the new treats on a first-come, first-served limited basis.

“Our dogs’ ancestors’ diets did not include grain, corn or other fillers,” says Mike Connelly, Vice President of Marketing for Nylabone® Products based in Neptune City, N.J. “We at Nylabone know that pet parents want the healthiest, most natural products for our pets, and these new grain-free dog treats are just that.”

Connelly says that veterinarians have known what many pet lovers have not: the link between a dog’s allergies and “unnatural” food fillers like wheat and corn. In his book “The Holistic Health Guide: Natural Care for the Whole Dog,” holistic pet care expert Doug Knueven, DVM, says “Grains contained in pet foods contribute to the widespread problem of canine allergies. You do not see wolves-our dogs’ wild counterparts-out grazing in the corn field.”

Rich in antioxidants and slow-cooked to help maintain nutrients, the new Grain-Free Dog Biscuits from Nylabone are made in the USA. The tasty biscuits are turkey-flavored and contain wholesome ingredients like peas, turkey meat, blueberries, cranberries and flaxseed.

Just as important is what they do not include: added sugar, molasses or salt; artificial flavors or colors; and preservatives. They contain no wheat, corn, rice, soy, or other grains. The new treats are perfect for sensitive stomachs and the fresh, healthful ingredients help build a strong and healthy immune system.

Only 8 calories each, Nylabone Grain Free Dog Biscuits are made for all dogs to enjoy from small to large. This allows pet parents to conveniently control portions and decide on how much to treat their dog.

The new products are available for a limited time only in Costco Warehouse in North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Puerto Rico. They are available in 4-pound “pantry packs” for $9.99.

MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 26, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Otter Project today announces that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) will be conducting public hearings regarding the failed “No-Otter” Zone in Ventura, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz on September 27, October 4 and October 6, 2011 respectively.

“The upcoming public hearings on the failed ‘No-Otter’ Zone hold the key to the future of southern sea otters in California. After 24 years, citizens have a momentous opportunity to help remove regulations that have effectively kept southern sea otters on the endangered species list,” said Steve Shimek, Chief Executive of The Otter Project.

Since 1987, a “No-Otter” Zone has existed in Southern California extending from Point Conception near Santa Barbara in the north, to the Mexico border in the south.

These “lines- in-the-water,” brought about due to pressure from fishing and oil industry interests, have set back the natural range expansion of the southern sea otter into Southern California.

Following a 2009 legal action brought against the USFWS by The Otter Project and the Environmental Defense Center, a sixty day comment period ending on October 24, 2011 has been enacted to determine the future of the failed zone.

“What this experiment has shown us is that zonal management of sea otters simply doesn’t work. It’s fairly clear that the otters aren’t paying much attention to these ‘borders’ and the time has come to stop insisting that they should,” said Shimek.

The Otter Project encourages citizens to attend the public hearings and vocalize their support for the removal of the “No-Otter” Zone in Southern California.

“If you love otters and want this charismatic California icon to be around for generations to come – we need your support,” said Shimek. “The meetings will be crucial in ensuring that the interests of southern sea otters are heard and not held hostage to the whims of industry.”

The USFWS meetings will commence at 5:00 p.m. with a one hour information session followed by a public hearing between 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

LA MESA, Calif., Aug. 8, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — According to LegalizeFerrets.org, the Department of Fish and Game has put impossible restrictions on the ferret legalization process. “We’re going by the book – but they’re ripping pages out from under us. Would California tolerate that behavior from any other Department?” says Pat Wright, of LegalizeFerrets.

On August 3rd, three ferret owners addressed the California Fish and Game Commission during the public comments period. Jeremy Trimm, Dr. Richard Smith and Christine Newman all made one point very clear.

The Fish and Game Commission has put ferret owners in a legal Catch-22.

Back in 2000, the Fish and Game Commission told ferret proponents that in order for them to consider legalizing the domestic ferret in California, they (the proponents) would need to fund an Environmental Impact Report.

11 years later, a preliminary EIR was produced by Dr. Geo Graening at Sacramento State University. The Fish and Game Commissioners at first refused to accept it.

Even after they did, they objected with, “You don’t have a CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) checklist.” This document had been prepared and presented months earlier. It was again presented to the Commission after this objection.

Sonke Mastrup, the Deputy Director of the Department of Fish and Game, responded with, “No reason to review the document until the Commissioners decide to ‘go to notice.’”

A separate response was, “We can’t go to notice until we review the documents.”

Catch-22.

I sent an email to Mr. Mastrup on July 21st:

Can you give us any updates? Our offer to pay for staff time stands (though don’t run up our bill until we have $ on hand, we’re about as solvent as the state of California!)

It does appear we are in a catch-22:

They won’t go to notice until they research the document.

They won’t research the document until they go to notice.

Thank you for any help.

Mr. Mastrup responded with: We are in such a situation. Perhaps an independent review could help. I will ask around.

Once more we go in front of the California Fish and Game Commissioners. Every six weeks or so they hold meetings and have a public comments period. This is the average citizen’s opportunity to address the Commission.

About the only response we get is, “Your time is up.”

When asked a simple question – “What more can we do?” The silence is deafening. They won’t even acknowledge the question anymore.

Imagine you have a grievance with the government. Perhaps a Commission appointed by the Governor. You present all the facts, you cover your bases, and you spend private money – but you don’t get an answer. Nothing. Stony silence.

We’re not just upset with the Commissioners. We’re upset with our leaders.

We collected 500 signatures outside a PetSmart in Santee, home of newly elected Assemblyman Brian Jones, back in January. A local news station covered our efforts. “Please Assemblyman Jones,” we begged, “Introduce a ferret legalization bill.”

We never heard from Assemblyman Jones. We heard on the news that night that our Assemblyman had other issues on his plate. We didn’t get a phone call, email or postcard. Our elected official ignored us.

A few months later, we collected thousands of signatures at the Orange County Pet Expo. We sent these signatures to Governor Jerry Brown. We’ve heard nothing back.

The most we ever got was a tweet from Sutter Brown, the governor’s pet corgi: “Geesh, ferrets? I think they’ve been trying 2 legalize in CA since last time dad was gov!”

Ferrets are not a burning issue – unless of course you have them in California. Then you can’t get a security clearance. You can’t be a foster parent. You have to be on guard at work every day.

And you certainly can’t take your pet ferret out in public. Even though a million other pet owners can!

We have documented, unbiased research showing all the concerns expressed by the Department and Commission of Fish and Game are baseless.

Ferrets are legal in 48 states. California has more ferrets than the next two states combined. What kinds of problems do we hear from those other states? None.

Not only is their stance ridiculous, the way Fish and Game treats us is disgraceful. This is not how a healthy society operates. People should have the ability to address their leaders, and be treated with dignity and respect.

The California Fish and Game Commissioners have not done that. Their treatment of California ferret enthusiasts should not be tolerated. For the health of our society, for the well being of our people, something needs to be done.

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn., June 2, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Turtle Conservation Project (TCP) wants your turtle pictures. “With so many people able to send an image right from their cell phone, we can quickly tell them which of Connecticut’s nine turtle species they have encountered,” said TCP’s Chuck Landrey.

“Plus we will send back a complete description of that species and its habitat needs, to educate folks about these amazing creatures.”

Send an image of any turtle you observe to turtleatlas@gmail.com for quick identification and advice.

In June Connecticut’s turtles greatly increase their movements as they seek out new habitat, mates and nesting sites.

Photos and detailed information on turtle sightings can also be entered online in less than three minutes at http://www.ctturtleatlas.com . It includes an interactive map that lets you pinpoint exactly where the turtle was found.

“We encourage people to also enter photos of car-killed turtles,” said Landrey. “We want to document where there are concentrations of turtles crossing roads. As hard as it is to look at those pictures, photographic evidence is essential.”

About The Turtle Conservation Project:
The Turtle Conservation Project is dedicated to protecting New England’s turtles and the habitats they depend upon.
