SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. – June 14 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The special temper copper for the “Impactor” on the “Deep Impact” spacecraft was supplied by Schuur Metals Inc. (www.schuurmetals.com) in San Clemente, California. The Impactor on the Deep Impact vehicle is scheduled to collide with Comet Tempel 1 80 million miles from Earth on July the 4th, 2005. The Impactor and the Tempel 1 will collide at a relative speed 23,000 mph and will impact at a force of 4 1/2 tons of TNT.
The collision is expected to create a crater over 300 feet in diameter and up to 100 feet deep. The “fireworks” may be visible by the naked eye from Earth. The purpose of the mission is to “give scientists a glimpse of the frozen primordial ingredients of the solar system.”
