NASHUA, NH (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Opti-Sciences, Inc. (www.optisci.com) today announced that a fluorescent measurement method commonly used in the bio-sciences is also effective in detecting manufacturing defects in automotive parts.
As a leading manufacturer of Fluorometers in the US, Opti-Sciences was approached by Magna-Tech Manufacturing to see if the same fluorescence measurement technology used with its OS-30p fluorometers for chlorophyll could also test for resin on the contacts of vacuum impregnated electronic modules. “Not only did Magna-Tech require an accurate means of measuring the resin, but they needed a quick, non-invasive test to indicate pass or fail.” said Bill Berzins, President of Opti-Sciences.

Due to the critical nature of these automotive components, a reliable method to inspect for contact cleanliness was essential. The resin that Magna-Tech utilizes in the sealing process fluoresces which created the opportunity to incorporate fluorescence testing to meet their customer’s specifications. When the resin is exposed to specific light energy it will give off light or glow at a known output frequency (color). This can then be measured and quantified using a scientific fluorometer (fluorescence meter).
Opti-Sciences’ hand-held OS-30p with its built-in fiber-optic probe proved ideal for the test procedure. After accommodating specific optics (filters) for the resin’s fluorescence, its on-board processor then quickly determines and displays the appropriate quantitative measurement.
“Since the implementation of this inspection process, not a single component has failed upon installation at my customer’s site,” said Marc Johnson, VP Northern Region for Magna-Tech Manufacturing.
Magna-Tech Manufacturing (www.magnatechmfg.com), headquartered in Muncie, Indiana, currently services Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive manufacturers for sealing of electronics and castings, both domestically and internationally, from their 6 North American factory locations.
